When we look at history, we can find many role models to emulate. Among the greatest were the traditions of the Warrior Sages. These individuals had deep training in the tenets of perennial wisdom as well as the arts of war. The result: qualities of character that made them great leaders as well as great warriors.

The Warrior Sage archetype can be found in many cultures. In Japan, it is exemplified in the Samurai tradition as represented by figures like Miyamoto Musashi and Yaguy Munenori. In India, enlightened warrior sages such as Rama, Dronacharya and Arjuna have inspired millions. In Western culture, King Arthur, Joan of Arc, and Queen Cordelia are examples of great Warrior Sages.

These Warrior Sages embodied principles that gave them access to their intuitive wisdom and fortified them in the face of their challenges. These are among the core principles of Heroic Leadership, and they are just as effective in today’s world as they were a thousand years ago.

“Good leadership” is no longer sufficient.  We need “great leadership” – the kind of leadership that is in tune with the radically changing times we find ourselves now living in. Although the challenges before us are unique in all of history, the choices before us are not unprecedented. Indeed, the only way today’s business leaders are going to rise to the challenge is to look back – not ahead. A paradox? Yes… but a paradox well worth exploring!

Most organizations, in their attempt to be “forward looking” have forgotten to heed the guiding wisdom of history’s great leaders – men and women who were able to accomplish extraordinary results – often under very difficult conditions. These “warrior sages” (i.e. samurai and others) spent decades developing the inner qualities necessary to achieve great results. Indeed, today’s leadership “best practices” pale in comparison to what history’s great warrior sages had mastered.
